March 16, 2009 - Honda Cars Philippines, Inc. (HCPI) continued to dominate the passenger car (PC) segment in February with 39% market share. Report released by the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI) showed that Honda generated 1,242 unit sales out of the total PC unit sales of 3,162. Essential in sealing its leadership in the segment was its locally manufactured All New City, comprising 60% of Honda’s PC sales.

Entering the local scene last January 2009, the 3rd generation City reinforced Honda’s claim in the PC segment with 744 unit sales in February. The introduction of the new City’s cutting-edge design and class-leading features that were once reserved for luxury vehicles simply changed the rules on how subcompacts should be like.

Honda’s other sedan models likewise played significant role in protecting the PC crown. The Civic logged 4% growth with 303 unit sales, thereby capturing 33% share of the entire compact sedan class. Jazz and Accord models posted 159 and 36 unit sales, respectively.

Honda remained optimistic as its Year-to-Date (YTD) PC sales grew by 31%.

In terms of commercial vehicle (CV) sales, Honda’s performance was up by 4% with its CR-V model. Including CR-V sales of 228 units, it recorded a total of 1,470 units in February. Of this figure, Honda ranked second among the entire automotive industry, thereby attaining 16% share of the market.

Tokyo — TOYOTA MOTOR CORPORATION (TMC) announces it has developed a Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) rear-seat center airbag—the first1 in the world—to help reduce the severity of secondary injuries incurred by rear-seat passengers in a side-on collision.

The new airbag is fitted in a large, fixed, rear-seat center console that comes in a version of a Toyota model to be launched in Japan in the near future. When the vehicle is hit side-on, the airbag deploys from the top of the console to act as a barrier that helps lessen injuries caused by passengers colliding with each other or into the console.

End of the road for RP car racing legend Pocholo Ramirez PDF Print E-mail

MANILA, Philippines - Jose "Pocholo" Ramirez, Jr., long acknowledged as the "Living Legend" of Philippine car racing, died early Wednesday after two years of battling cancer. He was 76.

The bearded racecar driver left behind a family of racers in sons Jose Andre (Kookie), Georges, Louie, Miguel and daughter-in-law Menchie. He has a grandson who now races regularly at the Subic International Raceway, a racetrack Ramirez himself built right after the Americans left their Subic Naval Base in the early 1990s.

Ramirez's remains lie in estate at the Christ The King Church in Green Meadows, Quezon City. According to his son Kookie, there will only be two days of wake for their father. A private ceremony will be held before the remains are cremated on Saturday.

The only son, Ramirez grew up in Manila during World War II, learning to drive by borrowing the jeeps of the American soldiers who passed by their house on Taft Avenue.

As a young man in the 1950s, he went to New York to work as a hotelier for Waldorf Astoria. It was in the United States where the racing bug bit him. He came back to Manila in the 1960s and met Arsenio "Dodjie" Laurel who lent him a go-kart and influenced him to take racing seriously.

His early career saw him joining the Shell Car Rally which Laurel himself pioneered. He won this on-time-all-the-time rally in 1966 as team captain of the Renault squad.
